BMW Showcases Self-Riding Motorcycle at CES 2019

Do you remember late last year when BMW Motorrad leaked a video showing an R 1250 GS zooming around the track without a rider on the back? It was exciting and strange at the same time, but it captivated all viewers, including us here at BMW Motorcycles of Concord in Concord, CA. Since then, we’ve all been anxiously awaiting more details. Thankfully, we got to see the bike firsthand at CES 2019 this year.

CES BMW 2019

It turns out that BMW never intended for this bike to make it to the public market. Instead, they created it to use as a test subject for the advanced rider-assist features that are in the works. The production team has only been working on it for three years. In fact, much of the technology you see on it already comes on most new BMW bikes.

BMW Motorrad continues to develop systems such as automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control to work with motorcycles. At this point, the company thinks it’s only a few years away before we see this additional BMW safety technology. When they first debut, it will be on the R-series touring bikes initially.

Further advanced systems also have other purposes. For example, the autonomous driving could teach beginners how to be safe on a motorcycle. It’s also possible to use it as a riding coach for advanced users that prefer to push the boundaries of their high-powered machines.
