If you have read a 2021 BMW R 18 Classic review, you already know it’s based on BMW’s new R 18 model, which celebrates BMW’s motorcycle heritage with a retro design. The Classic model takes the standard R18 and adds features to help make it a more comfortable long-range cruiser. At the front, you have a large windscreen to keep you more comfortable, plus additional LED headlights to help illuminate the road at night. Available footboards can be had in place of pegs, allowing you a more relaxed riding position. The R18 Classic also comes with a passenger seat so you can have someone join you on the adventure, and the built-in saddlebags provide four gallons of cargo space for those extended rides. In terms of styling, the engine is probably the more prominent feature. The heads of the large boxer engine poke out to the sides, and the engine case features milled accents with the BMW roundel mounted proudly at the front and plaques with ‘1800cc’ on the sides. The R 18 Classic also gets simple round exhaust pipes for an elegant look, and the bike’s open driveshaft looks incredible. The R 18 is offered in timeless Blackstorm Metallic black paint, and a First Edition dresses things up with the addition of double white pinstriping.
Power for the R 18 comes from a large two-cylinder boxer engine that displaces a generous 1,802 cubic centimeters. Maximum torque is 116 lb-ft, which arrives at 3,000 RPM, but the engine produces over 100 lb-ft of torque from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm for immediate urge and response. The engine produces 91 horsepower at 4,750 RPM. Braking is handled by twin discs measuring 300 mm upfront clamped by four-piston calipers, while the rear has a single 300 mm disc. BMW’s Motorrad Integral ABS system helps you make the most of the brakes and stop confidently in any conditions.
